Today India has emerged as the
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) superpower, thanks to the
multipronged IT educational initiatives that were launched during the 90’s. The
ICT industry covering both IT and IT-enabled services and the Telecom sector is
about to reach the magical figure of $100 billion by 2010. Software export has
already crossed US$ 50 billion mark. India’s Telecom industry has created a
history with 510 million mobile phones and about 37 million fixed-line phones.
The roadmap of 3G and 4G has been defined and next generation networks are being
introduced with multiplay converged devices. Most importantly, India has now
become the world’s R&D hub attracting world leaders like IBM, Microsoft, Google,
Yahoo, Cisco, Ericsson, Intel, Motorola, Analog services, Samsung, LG, Sony and
others who have set up large R&D centers in India for developing future
generation technology products and services. It is also widely recognized that
India cannot sustain its enviable growth rate in ICT unless it decisively
creates new innovations and establish world leadership in new technology
developments.
This paradigm shift from service
to innovation has placed new demands for advanced education and research in
emerging areas of ICT covering VLSI design, embedded system design, wired and
wireless networks and telecom infrastructure demands a whole range of software
development covering web services, SOA, EAI, Web 2 & 3 frameworks and advanced
computing spanning multicore, cluster and grid computing architectures.
Nucleated in 2001, School of
Information Technology (SoIT) is the flagship school of I2IT covering
all the major areas of advanced computing and information technology. The school
has four Departments:
-
Advanced Software & Computing
Technologies
-
Advanced Networking &
Telecommunications
-
Embedded System Design
-
Microelectronics and VLSI design
The objective of the School is to
nurture and develop competent, creative and productive professionals in a fast
track manner for India’s growing ICT industry
